Facts About Declining Brain Health

Here are several facts about brain health that you may find hard to believe…

Before you even hit your FORTIES your brain is losing about 2 per cent of its volume every decade. (That’s the best case scenario.)

By your SIXTIES that number has increased to as much as 10 per cent.

At the same time that muscle tissue is rapidly shrinking in your body, so is your brain tissue. Especially in areas like your hippocampus, the part of your brain which is critical to memory and learning.

In fact, it’s no coincidence that brain loss tracks muscle loss…And bone loss.

Did you know there’s a hormone produced by your bones that stimulates the growth of brain cells?

So when your bones grow thin, as they do for women with osteoporosis, your brain thins out too? When this happens your memory loss goes into overdrive!

If you’re like me, you had no idea about brain health and why it is so important. You will certainly want to know what to do to prevent this kind of irreversible brain damage.

Your Brain Health Matters

Luckily, if you want to preserve brain volume, memory, and all-round cognitive function, you can. There are simple ways to go about maintaining brain health and you’ll find several of them outlined in my book shown above completely free.

As mentioned before, even if you are perfectly healthy, she told me, your brain will shrink as much as 15 per cent before your time is up and if you suffer pain like back pain, for example, your brain shrinks even faster as a result.

…And along with that go all the worrying consequences you might expect of having diminished brain capacity.

BUT – if you also happen to be dealing with severe and prolonged or as they call it chronic pain, this shrinkage will happen a whole lot FASTER.

Chronic back pain sufferers lose about 5 to 10 per cent of their grey matter each year.

That’s about the same as 10 to 20 years of normal ageing.

So your aching back is literally causing your brain to wither away and the result will eventually be the same as if you were diagnosed with dementia:

– loss of memory
– inability to focus
– poor decision making
– personality and behavioural changes
– even seizures

In fact, backache is likely to significantly increase your odds of dementia (which at 65 years of age affects around 10 per cent of the population, and the risk continues to double every 5 years from that point on).

Researchers at the Northwestern University Institute of Neuroscience found that back pain sufferers lost an average of 1.3 cubic centimetres of grey matter – the part of the brain that processes information and memory – for every year of chronic pain.

Back pain is just ONE of the reasons why your brain may be susceptible to excessive shrinkage.  Not exercising regularly (which is tough to do if your back hurts) is another.
