As we grow older and become more informed we understand how important it is to look after our health. *A diet high in saturated fats from certain sources may cause heart disease. It should be noted that not all saturated fats are unhealthy. Red meat is one of those that it would be better to avoid. One can eat seafood and nuts as their protein source instead of red meat. Monounsaturated fats like olive oil are excellent to eating for a healthy heart and can be used in cooking as well as in any sauces or dressings.
*Another important aspect of good health is a healthy digestive system. This can be maintained by eating enough fiber which may also assist in controlling the cholesterol levels. Whole grains contain fiber which also help to maintain sugar levels.
One of the worst things that affect heart disease is eating too much sugar in the form of pastries, cakes, candy and cookies. Carbohydrates such as whole grain breads and pastas as well as brown rice are a much better choice, and what is even more beneficial is a diet of mainly vegetables and fruits.
Use olive oil or canola oil for stir frying or sauteing. Any form of batter is not beneficial, so fish can either be fried in olive oil or baked in the oven. It is suggested that chicken be cooked without the skin. An excellent way of cooking vegetables is to steam them as they retain their nutrients this way. Instead of using rich cream sauces rather season with your favorite spices and also squeeze lemon juice over the vegetables.
